If your program uses Smart Match, you can see an AI-generated explanation of why you and your mentoring partner were paired together, right from your Loop home page. Match Rationale is only available for loops created through Smart Match.
Smart Match is Mentorloop's AI-augmented, algorithmically led matching system that pairs mentors and mentees based on their profiles, goals, skills, and other program criteria.
Smart Match understands free-text responses, goals, aspirations, and lived experiences, not just dropdown selections. The result? Matches grounded in genuine alignment, powered by over 10 years of data on what makes mentoring relationships thrive.
Why does Match Rationale matter for my mentoring?
Knowing why you were matched means you can skip the guesswork and jump straight into meaningful conversation. Rather than spending early sessions figuring out what you have in common, Match Rationale gives you a foundation to build on from day one.
Match Rationale can help you:
- Break the ice faster — see shared goals, skills, or experiences before your first meeting.
- Set better goals — understand the areas of alignment your match is based on, so you can focus your mentoring conversations.
- Build trust earlier — feel confident that your match was made thoughtfully, not randomly.
- Have more productive conversations — use shared interests and complementary experiences as natural talking points throughout your relationship.
What does Match Rationale show me?
Match Rationale gives you a plain-language explanation of the key reasons you were matched with your partner. It draws on two things: the matching rules your Program Coordinator has set, and your profile information such as expectations, focus areas, and goals.
The explanation is written to describe your pairing without naming either of you directly, so it reads as an objective summary of the match. The specific factors highlighted depend on your program's configuration, but typically include:
- Goal alignment — where your mentoring goals overlap or complement each other.
- Skills and experience — areas where your mentor or mentee has relevant expertise that relates to what you're looking to develop or share.
- Communication style — preferences around how you like to communicate and work together.
- Shared experiences — common professional or personal experiences that create a natural connection point, such as a similar career transition or industry background.
Where do I find it?
You'll find your Match Rationale on your Loop home page. It's displayed in a collapsible section so it's there when you want it and out of the way when you don't. Once generated, it stays on your Loop for future reference.
How is Match Rationale generated?
Match Rationale is generated automatically when your loop is created. If it hasn't appeared yet, you can trigger it yourself directly from your Loop home page.
How can I use Match Rationale to improve my mentoring?
Here are a few practical ways to make the most of your Match Rationale:
- Before your first meeting: Review the rationale to understand what you and your match have in common, and use these shared areas as conversation starters.
- When setting goals: Look at the goal alignment section to identify where your mentor or mentee can best support you, and build your mentoring goals around those areas.
- If you're unsure what to discuss: Revisit the rationale at any point during your mentoring journey — the shared experiences and skills highlighted can spark new topics as your relationship develops.
Why can't I see Match Rationale?
Match Rationale is only available for loops created through Smart Match. If your program uses a different matching method, such as self-match or manual matching, Match Rationale won't be available for your loop.

Can I improve the quality of my Match Rationale?
Yes. The more complete your profile, the more your Match Rationale can reflect what makes your pairing meaningful. Make sure your goals, skills, bio, and any other profile fields are filled in and up to date.

What if I don't agree with my match?
If you feel your match isn't the right fit, reach out to your Program Coordinator. They can review the match and, if needed, explore rematching options. Mentorloop supports multiple mentoring relationships, so there may also be an opportunity to connect with additional mentors or mentees.
Is my personal information shared with my match?
Match Rationale only surfaces information that both you and your match have already shared through your sign-up profiles. It does not reveal any additional private data. The rationale is based on the public profile fields configured by your Program Coordinator.
