Setting goals in Mentorloop gives your mentoring relationship direction, and sharing them with your mentor or mentee creates a foundation for focused, purposeful sessions. This article explains how to create goals in the platform, offers examples to get you started, and shows you where to find additional resources.
How do I create a goal in Mentorloop?
Goals in Mentorloop can be created and shared with your mentoring partner directly from your loop or dashboard. Here's how:
- Navigate to the Goals section, find it in the left-hand sidebar or on your dashboard.
- Select Create a goal and follow the prompts to describe what you're working toward.
- Choose whether to share the goal with your mentor or mentee. Shared goals become a visible, joint reference point for your sessions.
Not sure what kind of goal to set?
Think about goals in three categories: habit-forming (things you want to build into your routine), reach goals (stretching but achievable within the programme), and stretch goals (ambitious longer-term aims). Examples for both mentors and mentees are outlined below.
Example goals for mentors
Mentors benefit from goal setting too. Here are examples across the three goal types to use as a starting point or inspiration.
Habit-forming goals
- Read or research for 30 minutes each week on becoming a more effective mentor.
- Develop a growth mindset, actively seek out perspectives that challenge your existing views.
- Build a journaling or reflection habit after each mentoring session.
Reach goals
- Become a trusted, positive role model in your organisation or community.
- Build and strengthen your professional network through mentoring connections.
- Become a Mentoring Champion for your programme and help recruit future participants.
- Start a Reverse Mentoring partnership alongside your current mentoring relationship.
Stretch goals
- Develop your professional brand and increase your visibility in your field.
- Become an alumni mentor after your current programme ends.
- Improve your ability to share experience and perspective, rather than advice, letting your mentee find their own answers.
